Learning about the importance of equaltiy

Today I worked with Buzzfeed's LGBTI reporter Lane Sainty (@landsainty) on a forum at Parliament House in Canberra, where a panel of transgender young people addressed politicians about the importance of their right to gender transition without need of a ruling from the Family Court.

Even with permission from parents, the minor's physician and the expressive willingness from the person themselves, people under 18 have to go through a lengthy and costly (up to 12 months and $30,000) legal protocol, which leaves the final say on their own body to a judge. Lengthy judicial processes lead to higher rates of youth depression and mental illness, with an alarming percentage of LGBTIQ youths having attempted suicide.

Those in attendance at the forum heard moving speeches from transgender people such as 15 year old Georgie Stone, who bravely want to bring attention to politicians that their cause needs immediate attention.

Please read Lane's article here. It is an extremely important issue.
