It's a sense of excitement that people feel of being in a collective, sharing something with others who they don't know. People get swept up with the evocative feeling of anticipation, culminating in a hand-shake or a short conversation with a public figure whose image has been widely disseminated via mass media since he was born. Through the media's coverage of the Prince for over 30 years, people feel to an extent that they know him somewhat, or at least his history, and the people who lined up to see him feel a connection to that which they have seen, read and heard over that long period of time. There is also the 'wow' factor of a public figure that draws people in. Personally, I like crowds, so whether it's a protest or a parade, a party or a press conference, the crowd or onlookers to the main event will always be of great interest to me as a photographer.
