I recently had the great pleasure of seeing Paul Kelly live in concert for the first time. I know, I know, where have I been? I remember back in 2002, driving between Broken Hill and Ivanhoe in Western NSW, listening to Paul Kelly on repeat. Being in the country and listening to one of the greatest poets of song has stayed with me all these years, and I was taken back to that drive again last week with the sounds of Paul and his band, backed up by the incredible duo of Vika and Linda at the Australia Day Concert in Canberra. Working on a corporate gig for the Australian of the Year Awards, I was able to shoot the entire concert rather than just the first three songs. After I had all my 'serious' shots in the bag I started to play with long exposures, zooming and moving the camera around. Paul's unmistakable, bald noggin' provided great contrast against the black night sky, and I got pretty excited shooting so freely and experimentally. I knew immediately that I wanted to convert the images to black and white, and after a long day shooting, I couldn't get to sleep until I had uploaded all the shots and made a first edit.
